tattoo tales

" This tattoo represents my time going back to my grandparents' house in India during the summers after moving to America. They had a big garden with lots of trees and liked to grow different types of fruit. My favorites were guavas, lychees, and Alphonso mangoes. We would all get together on the rooftop terrace in the evening over fresh fruit usually when the electricity cut out for an hour or two, hence the candle). Those summers are some of my best memories. "

" When I was around five, my mom purchased our first home. We lived there for a couple of months and it was only when a bag of potato chips catapulted itself across the counter that we discovered we shared the house with mice. I was horrified at the thought of killing them, so we conspired a way to trap them alive and release them in a nearby field. My mom was like that; kind to a fault even to pests.

She passed away 10 years ago and every year on her birthday I make cupcakes. They don't have to be perfect. Some years, I make them from scratch, and others I make them from a box. Either way, it's a chance to continue to celebrate her and keep a part of her alive. This little tattoo is for her and all the small ways she taught me to move, however imperfectly, through life with a mix of compassion and silliness. "

" This tattoo is a tribute to my late Yorkie, Zoe. During my years as a vet tech, I rescued Zoe from euthanasia. She was a frequent flyer in the clinic due to her diabetes. From the first day I got Zoe, she was a diva through and through. Some of my favorite memories with her are going shopping and our last trip to New York City before we had to say goodbye. So when Pinar suggested Zoe holding a shopping bag with the 'I ♡ New York' symbol, I immediately knew it was perfect. Zoe and New York will always hold a special place in my heart, and this tattoo represents both. "

«This tattoo is representative of time I spent with my Nana as a little girl. Anytime I visited her, we would have tea parties just the two of us - though my "tea" was usually hot chocolate. She was the sweetest and kindest woman. She passed when I was ten, but I carry her with me always. This tattoo will serve as a reminder of some of my favorite childhood memories and to always make time for the sweet things in life.»
